assigned to the Third Infantry Division.  Planned ground operation for the Middle East
while assigned to 3rd US Army, and planned for Military Support to Civil Authorities during
disasters and emergencies while assigned to U.S. Army Forces Command.  Deployed to
Saudi Arabia and Kuwait as deterrent to movements of Iraqi units towards Kuwait in 1994.  
Provided humanitarian support during the Cuban Mariel boat lift in 1980 and was the Joint
Operation Officer  for the Kosovo refugees in 1999.  Retired from active duty in 2000.  
Regimental affiliation is the 5th Aviation Regiment.

Joined the army in October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis and proudly served 24
years. Served 11 years in Air Defense Artillery with training and most assignments at Fort
Bliss, Texas. In the early years, was a member of the Army Air Defense Command
(ARADCOM), which supported NORAD. Served 13 years in Military Intelligence (MI) with a
wide range of assignments. Final assignment was that of Command Sergeant Major for the
140th Military Intelligence Battalion (Command Electronics Warfare Intelligence.)
Oversea tours included three tours in Republic of Korea and one tour in Alaska. One tour
in Korea was as a First Sergeant in a Psychological Operations Company assigned to
support the Combined Unconventional Warfare Center and Korean Special Operations
Command at SungNam, South Korea.  
Decorations include: Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal with 3 Oak
Leaf Clusters, Army Achievement Medal, Army Good Conduct Medal with Knots, National
Defense Service Medal, Armed Forces Expeditionary Medal, Korean Defense Service

While in the Army, met wife Beth  in Columbia and soon went to work on producing three children over the next 6-8
years. Then became the sports editor of a small paper in New Jersey before moving back to Virginia where we have
enjoyed life since 1966. Received many sports writing awards and enjoyed covering prep and college sports.
